Although he’s still facing involuntary manslaughter charges, Alec Baldwin no longer has to fear a five-year prison sentence for his role in the 2021 fatal shooting of Rust cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. Heather Brewer, spokesperson for New Mexico First Judicial D.A. Mary Carmack-Altwies, said an enhanced firearm element of the involuntary manslaughter charges has been removed “in order to avoid further litigious distractions by Mr. Baldwin and his attorneys." In a court filing earlier this month, Baldwin's legal team said the prosecution committed an "unconstitutional and elementary legal error" by including the firearm aspect. They argued that the statute enabling them to add it to the charges was not yet in effect at the time of the shooting. The case gets under way on Friday with its first hearing. Baldwin and Rust armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, who also faces involuntary manslaughter charges, will attend the hearing virtually. >>>Armorer's Attorney Cheers Decision |
