With Golden Globes nominations set for Monday, Hollywood has a big decision to make when it comes to the beleaguered Hollywood Foreign Press Association: Is it too soon to forgive the org for its corrupt past and lack of diversity just so everyone can booze it up again at the Beverly Hilton? It's not as if the HFPA hasn't tried to clean up its house. Besides boosting its membership makeup of those from racial and ethnically diverse groups to over 51%, the group has also killed its long-ridiculed practice of accepting gifts. Those changes, unfortunately, weren't enough for people like Brendan Fraser, who's already made it clear he won't attend the kudofest after the 2003 groping incident by the ex-HFPA chief. Fraser is earning plenty of attention for his work on The Whale ; but he won't do so at the Beverly Hilton on January 10. Others in Hollywood, while not ready to make the same drastic decision, do still have reservations about the organization that actor Gary Oldman once described as "90 nobodies having a wank." One source at a Big Three agency tells Deadline that it feels like everyone is in a “wait-and-see scenario” vis-à-vis the Globes. >>>Still A Key Campaign Boost? |
