Amazing images show how loved the old Birmingham trams were

In the future, when the current fleet of Metro trams are retired, would there be a heart-warming send-off? There was for the old trams - bordering on a street party.

The last tram, the 616, left the Steelhouse Lane terminus packed with passengers on 4th July 1953. Throughout the 90 minute journey to the end of the line, people gave it a fond farewell.

Thousands upon thousands of people pass through New Street Station every day. But in those quieter moments, late at night and waiting for the last train, your mind might wander - and feel something odd.
