25 years since Princess Diana's death - how did Birmingham react?

In the early hours of 31st August 1997, bleary-eyed Sunday Mercury writers made a change to that day's paper. "Di hurt, Dodi dead in horror smash", read the new front page.

By the time that paper was on the shelves, everyone had already heard the next part of the story. The "Peoples' Princess" and "Queen of Hearts" had died aged 36 after a car crash in France.

How did Birmingham react? Find out through the story of the strange week that followed.

Birmingham's great markets in archive photos through the years

Online shopping is easy, shopping centres bring big names under one roof - but there's nothing quite like a morning at the markets. The sheer variety, going for cheeky spot of haggling, and chatting with the characters is a great experience.

We've had plenty of them, too. From the bustling iron markets of the late Middle Ages, to the sweet smells of modern farmers' markets on street corners today, we know how to get a good deal.

Take a look at our gallery of Birmingham markets through the decades - going right back to the Edwardian era.

B23 - a drab designation for a place that many call home.

Erdington's rise as a major area of Birmingham only began a couple of hundred years ago, but it's hard to imagine the city without its busy High Street, or the warm feeling of seeing Fort Dunlop from the M6 when you're returning to the city.
