Vikrant Rona Review By Taran Adarsh - Sitting in a theatre, absolutely dark, with 3D glasses, and a film shot mostly at night on the big screen, in poorly lit places including forests and houses in a village - it was quite a dark experience to watch Vikrant Rona.

Vikrant Rona Movie Review - Taran Adarsh

Starring Kichcha Sudeep in the lead, writer-director Anup Bhandari's film is a hot jumble of genres ranging from action, adventure and fantasy, and after watching it, you can add horror, dark comedy and domestic drama to the list.

Still, it hardly does anyone justice. Vikrant Rona merges a lot of things into one and leaves you confused for most of its runtime. The Kannada film, which is dubbed in Hindi, has a lot going on at the same time and it doesn't really let you focus on a single character or event for a long time.

Set in the fictional Kamarottu village (also the site of Bhandari's debut film Rangi Tarang; 2015), Vikrant begins to cry as the bodies of small children hanging from tree branches are found and the headless body of an inspector thrown into the well.

There is a house where all the members have some story to lead each day in a new play.

Janardhan (Madhusudan Rao) is living with his wife who is battling cancer. Their estranged son Sanju (Nirup Bhandari) has suddenly returned from London after leaving home years ago but is not allowed to enter the house.

Janardhan's younger brother and his family have come from Mumbai to marry daughter Panna (Neeta Ashok), who eventually falls in love with Sanju. And then Vikrant enters Rona (Sudeep), trying to get to the bottom of these mysterious murders of children who are believed to have been killed by a demon.

How Vikrant unravels these mysteries, picks up a series of unsolved clues left by his predecessor, and all this, all while dealing with a personal loss.

The first half till the intermission keeps you invested and the mystery behind the motive behind these murders and the mystery of each character. But, the drop in both the story and the pace after the intermission disappointed me a lot.

It just loses the plot and nothing further here makes sense. Unnecessary subplots are introduced. Different characters and stories are central. Not all good.

At 147-minutes, Vikrant Rona appears in too much of a hurry to justify its countless characters, and complicated plot. The subtle comedy we've been enjoying until now suddenly turns into terrifying horror, mostly with jump scares.

Here, I would like to mention about the scary and loud background score which does not bode well for the story.

The only thing (or two) that remains constant in Vikrant Rona is the visual appeal and Sudeep's unmatched swag. The cinematography department does a good job in capturing the landscape and the CGI doesn't look exaggerated.

And as far as the hero of the film is concerned, the swag he carries and the charm he creates, leaves a strong impression. His mannerisms, movements, action and even emotional scenes serve a complete package. Sudeep's scenes with his daughter Geetanjali Rona are lovely and at the same time add a different dimension to the otherwise monotonous narrative.

Sadly, all this has been abandoned by a poorly written and ineffectively executed script. Bhandari's direction may have tried to save the film from doom, but the story does not allow it to happen.

Nirup Bhandari is quite a surprise and impresses with his balanced performance in few scenes. Neeta Ashok has a pivotal role, but by no means has a well-defined character arc and gets limited screen time.

Then, there's Jacqueline Fernandez as dancer Raquel D'Costa, who is hot for Vikrant but with nothing beyond a cameo, not adding much to the story.

It would not be wrong to call Vikrant Rona an ambitious film, but in most places, you would feel that the team has gone too ambitious and to achieve and show too much to the audience, it turns out to be a confusing story without any focus. terminates. ,

Watch it to enjoy the superstar persona of Sudeep and make some action sequences scintillating.
